FAQs
Are Ecosure water butts suitable for winter use?
Yes - you can use them year-round. However, in freezing conditions, water can expand and damage the unit. It’s best to partially drain smaller models during cold snaps and ensure taps and outlets are insulated.
Are these Dipping Tanks durable, weather-resistant, and built to last?
Yes. Made from aluminium with robust TIG-welded seams (no liners or sealants), these tanks are rust-proof and exceptionally durable. The powder-coated finish offers long-lasting protection and style.
Are these made in the UK?
Yes! All products are proudly and lovingly made in the UK. This includes ALL of our ranges: bin & recycling storage, bike & scooter shelters, log & firewood storage, compost bins, garden planters, water butt planters, living wall planters, dipping tanks, wildflower products and more.
Are water butts easy to install?
Absolutely. Ecosure water butts are designed for straightforward DIY installation and won’t take more than an hour with basic tools. For larger systems or indoor integration, professional assistance is advisable.
Can I propagate aquatic or moisture-loving plants in my Dipping Tank?
Absolutely - planting aquatic or bog-loving species directly in your Dipping Tank enriches its appearance and helps balance the ecosystem. Accessories like the Soaking Tray or Planting Shelf make it even easier to maintain healthy, thriving plants.
Can I take my Dipping Tank with me if I move?
Yes - thanks to their lightweight aluminium construction, you can easily drain the tank via its bottom ports and transport it to your new location.
Can using a water butt help with managing flood risk?
Yes. By collecting and using rainwater during dry seasons, your water butt also serves as a flood-attenuation system during the wetter months - slowing down runoff into drains and reducing local flood pressure.
Does the Dipping Tank overflow or impact drainage?
No worries - each tank includes threaded overflow ports at its upper ends. Simply install a diverter or overflow kit to channel excess water to a drain, soakaway, or garden bed - creating a “set-and-forget” system.
How can I prevent mosquitoes from breeding in my Dipping Tank?
To help keep mosquitoes at bay near your Dipping Tank:
Add scented plants like marigold, rosemary, or lavender that mosquitoes dislike.
Encourage some water movement, such as a waterfall accessory or bubbler.
How can I stop soil from contaminating the water, in the water butt planter?
Mesh covers or filters are effective at preventing compost or soil particles from entering the water reservoir. These help maintain cleaner water and reduce maintenance.
How long do Ecosure water butts last, and are they good value?
These units typically have a lifespan of 10–15 years, offering excellent value. The environmental and cost savings from rainwater harvesting often offset the initial purchase within a few seasons.
Is installation difficult?
Not at all. Dipping Tanks come pre-assembled with clear instructions. All you need is a level base. Even novice DIYers can install with ease.
My water butt smells—what’s causing it?
Stagnant water can develop an odour, especially if not used regularly. It’s perfectly safe for garden use—even if it smells a bit. Just ensure that wildlife hasn’t accumulated inside and use the water for plants without worry.
Should I remove the plug or stopper from my water butt planter?
We recommend keeping the stopper in place. Instead, gently drill several small holes (around 5 mm) into it. This allows water drainage while preventing debris and leaf fall that can contribute to sludge formation.
What capacity water butt should I choose for my garden?
Generally, for most gardens, a capacity between 100 and 500 litres is sufficient. If you find you need more, many models allow connection of multiple units so you can expand your system easily.
What is a Dipping Tank and how does it differ from a traditional water butt?
A Dipping Tank is a stylish, modern alternative to the conventional water butt - it connects to your rainwater downpipe, and allows you to scoop harvested rainwater directly with a watering can or bucket, without the need for taps or hoses. It’s both a functional storage unit and an eye-catching garden feature.
This can also be used as a 'Dipping Pond', featuring aquatic plants and fish.
What sizes are available and what’s the water capacity?
The Dipping Tanks come in a range of sizes—from compact (approximately 110 L) to larger options (up to around 370 L). You can also link multiple units to increase total capacity and customise your rainwater harvesting setup.
What types of water butts are available in the Bluum collection?
Bluum offers an extensive range, including slimline models, wall-mounted units, city-style planters, pillar designs, and large-capacity butts. With various shapes, finishes, and capacities, there’s an option to suit any garden layout or aesthetic.
What's the benefit of rainwater over tap water for plants?
Rainwater is naturally soft and free from additives like chlorine, fluoride, and hard minerals found in tap water. Many plants, especially acid-loving ones like camellias and rhododendrons, thrive on rainwater’s purity.
What’s the best way to control algae growth?
Algae thrives on excess nutrients. Introduce aquatic plants to cover roughly half of the Dipping Tank's water surface - this naturally consumes nutrients and reduces algae formation, mimicking a balanced pond environment.
